About Africa Health 2010

In early November, USAID's Bureau for Africa awarded AED with a new Project called Africa's Health in 2010. The purpose of the project is to assist USAID in reaching the objectives identified in the White Paper, U.S. Foreign Aid: Meeting the Challenges of the Twenty-First Century, and the USAID Fragile States Strategy. These objectives will be reached by providing strategic, analytical, communications and advocacy, and monitoring and evaluation support to USAID missions, USAID regional programs, the Africa Bureau, and African institutions and networks. This five-year project will identify policy and implementation constraints and emerging issues around Africa's health status and will help identify innovative approaches to address and overcome these challenges. Africa 2010 will also participate in reviews and evaluations of regional and country programs to identify lessons learned and assist USAID to reach its strategy goals. Many development challenges are cross-cutting in nature, so the AED team will work across sectors, such as education, agriculture and environment, to improve the health status of Africans.

AED, the consortium leader, is joined by Tulane University's School of Tropical Medicine, the Population Reference Bureau, Abt Associates and Heartlands International as well as a talented array of experienced African and international partner organizations in implementing this initiative. The team draws on their experience under the Support for Analysis and Research (SARA) project and builds upon their successes to address the health challenges of Africa over the next 5 years.
