THE CONFERENCE

HIV/AIDS is among the greatest challenges to sustainable economic, social and civil society development today; it is a global crisis that undermines all aspects and all sectors of entire societies. An effective response demands committed, sustained, urgent action by alliances of individuals and organizations. An epidemic as complex and as destructive as HIV/AIDS requires innovative and multisectoral responses beyond standard public health measures. The focus of this conference was to address developing such responses, with attendance open to development practitioners across all technical sectors. The specific objectives were to:

  • Develop a common understanding of multisectoral approaches to HIV/AIDS;
  • Discuss the risks, impacts of HIV/AIDS on key sectors, and successful responses from the field;
  • Determine further action organizations can undertake to meet the challenge of HIV/AIDS; and
  • Identify partnership opportunities, funding options, promising practices, and tools that organizations can use to address HIV/AIDS.

Sponsors of the conference included approximately 20 organizations working in collaboration with the USAID Team for Multisectoral Approaches to HIV/AIDS.
