INFECTIOUS
DISEASES
The
SARA Project provides technical support for the management of the Infectious
Diseases Results Package of the Africa Bureau, Office of Sustainable Development.
The project carries out research, analysis, information dissemination,
and advocacy, emphasizing partnership and leadership capacity development
with African institutions and networks in following areas: Malaria, Tuberculosis,
Integrated Disease Surveillance and Epidemic Response.
SARA
has supported the following activities:
- Initiatives
on the prevention of malaria in pregnancy in Africa - SARA has contributed
AFR/SD/HRD-sponsored working group meetings to discuss issues and approaches
for addressing malaria and pregnancy in Africa. SARA staff have worked
with the interagency Malaria and Pregnancy working group to develop
an advocacy brochure, Lives at Risk: Malaria and Pregnancy, designed
for policy makers and maternal health program managers. A supplement
on malaria and pregnancy to Annals of Tropical Medicine & Parasitology
Journal were produced and distributed.
- Monitoring
and Evaluation of the Joint WHO/AFRO and USAID support for selected
health programs in Africa - SARA staff and consultants have assisted
with joint reviews of WHO/AFRO regional and country programs on malaria,
and epidemic preparedness and response. Reports of the reviews conducted
so far are available at WHO/AFRO.
- Collaboration
and Capacity Building African Institutions - SARA works with AFR/SD
and its partners to promote collaboration and capacity building of African
institutions in the area of infectious disease prevention and control.
Malaria Research and Training Center (MRTC) in Bamako, Mali, WHO Regional
Office for Africa in Harare, Zimbabwe, HealthScope Inc. in Dar Es Salaam,
Tanzania are among the African institutions and networks with which
SARA has interactions.
- Women
and tuberculosis in Africa- In collaboration with HealthScope and the
National Tuberculosis Control Program of Tanzania, SARA has sponsored
a working group meeting in Tanzania to review and advise a study team
on finalizing a study of the gender dimension of the TB epidemic in
Africa. HealthScope will be conducting a pilot study in four districts
in Tanzania.
- SARA has
supported a number fora organized by African partner institutions and
networks for information dissemination and identification of priority
infectious disease issues for consideration by AFR/SD and its development
partners.
